“The first layer drives all of us.“
What I mean by the first layer is the emotional core we all share before identity, culture, or background. It’s the part of us that remembers through feeling, not language. Where love, loss, fear, or longing are not taught but deeply known. This layer is what makes us human—what moves us, no matter who we are or where we’re from.
Two films struck me deeply with this idea.
In After Life (1998), the dead must choose one memory to carry with them forever. It’s never fame or success they choose, but simple, emotional moments: a breeze, a parent’s voice, a hand held. That one memory reveals who they were at their core.
In Inception (2010), the most powerful idea planted in the billionaire’s son wasn’t about money – it was the belief that “my father wanted me to be my own man.” A memory reimagined with love. That emotional truth changed everything.
